Remote Rehab for Ataxia and Every Neurological Disorder: How LWA Works and What to Expect

I have ataxia, and I like to call it MS on steroids.

Acquired ataxia that lit a fire under a hereditary ataxia nobody knew I had. I spent 18 months bouncing between hospitals before anyone could even put a name on it. I ended up in a wheelchair, unable to touch my own nose, with neurologist after neurologist telling me the chair was as good as it gets.

Today I walk. I drive. I travel. I live alone. COMPLETELY independent.

I'm not telling you that to impress you. I'm telling you because when I talk about remote rehab, I'm not guessing. I built LWA because I lived this, and because the program I needed didn't exist when I needed it. Nobody was coming to my house to fix it. I had to build it.

So here's exactly how remote rehab works at LWA, what the research actually says, and what you can honestly expect. For ataxia, MS, Parkinson's, stroke, TBI, cerebral palsy, ALS, spinal cord injury, and every other neurological condition.

Can You Really Do This Over a Screen?

That's the first question everybody asks. Fair question.

Yes. Here's why.

Neurological rehab isn't about somebody's hands on your body. It's about retraining a nervous system. Ataxia damages the cerebellum and the wiring that runs from it. That's not weakness. It's a broken signal. And broken signals get rebuilt through one thing: repetitive, progressive, task-specific movement, done consistently, pushed just past what you can do today.

That requires the right exercises, the right progression, and you doing the work. It doesn't require a clinic.

Remote actually has one big advantage: you train where your life happens. Your floor. Your furniture. Your stairs. Your bathroom doorway. That's where the gains have to show up anyway. Train in a clinic and you're hoping the skill transfers home. Train at home and there's nothing to transfer. You're already there.

The research backs it up. Researchers at Johns Hopkins put 14 people with cerebellar ataxia, mild to severe, on a six-week home balance program. Walking speed went up about 15%. Stride length, balance, and gait scores improved too, and most of it held a month after the program ended. Here's the part that matters most: the single biggest predictor of improvement wasn't age, how severe their ataxia was, or how long they'd had it. It was how hard the balance work challenged them. (Keller & Bastian, Neurorehabilitation and Neural Repair, 2014.)

Read that again. Not "how close you were to a therapist." How hard you were pushed. That's the whole LWA philosophy in one study. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable.

It's one small study, and I'm not going to pretend it's the final word. But it lines up exactly with what I lived and what we see with clients.

The Blind Spot Nobody Talks About

Here's why most people never even get this far.

The mainstream machine chases a number on a lab report and pours everything into a "someday" cure. Meanwhile almost nobody asks the only question that matters to you: what is this doing to how I move, balance, and function TODAY?

A statin handed to a neurological patient should set off alarm bells. It usually doesn't. Your cholesterol number looks better on paper, and nobody checks whether your balance got worse.

And "manage your symptoms"? That's a garbage goal. Managing symptoms isn't living. (I wrote a whole post on this — Just Manage It. The Two Words That Are Keeping You Stuck.)

Most neurological conditions are progressive when you take the wrong approach. We have the right approach. And that gap between your real life right now and a number on a chart is the whole reason LWA exists.

What the Work Actually Looks Like

Balance training. The cerebellum runs your balance. We train it progressively, starting exactly where you are and raising the bar on purpose. Feet together. Tandem stance. Single leg. Eyes open, then eyes closed. Unstable surfaces. The nervous system adapts when it's challenged just past its current limit, not when it's coddled.

Gait training. Wide-based, unsteady, unpredictable walking is one of the most limiting parts of ataxia and a lot of other neurological conditions. We work stride length, rhythm, foot placement, and trunk control, using visual targets, rhythmic cues, and steadily harder challenges. (For the full road map, read Wheelchair to Walking: What It Really Takes.)

Coordination. Hand control, fine motor work, eye-hand coordination. These aren't "nice to haves." Every rep is a neurological adaptation.

Strength. Ataxia doesn't directly cause weakness, but disuse and compensation sure do. Strength supports everything else, so we build it.

Nutrition. The foundation, not an afterthought. Exercise gives the brain the signal. Nutrition gives it the material to act on that signal. You can't rebuild a nervous system on bad fuel.

At LWA we push a carnivore diet, or at the very least carnivore-leaning. Meat, eggs, fish, animal fat. Your brain is built largely out of fat and cholesterol, and vitamin B12 — which your nerves can't function without — comes naturally from animal foods. Doctors like Dr. Shawn Baker, MD, Dr. Anthony Chaffee, MD, and Dr. Ken Berry, MD have been making this case for years. Chaffee keeps a library of more than 140 studies and articles at dranthonychaffee.com/resources if you want to dig in.

Straight talk: it will NOT lower your cholesterol. That's fine. That's expected. Cholesterol is a building block for the brain. We're rebuilding a nervous system, not decorating a lab report.

And nutrition isn't an upsell at LWA. It's in every single package. What scales with the tier is depth, not whether you get it.

How LWA Delivers It, Step by Step

Step 1: Free 30-minute Zoom consultation. We talk diagnosis, history, where you are right now, and where you want to be. I'll ask pointed questions: what's worst, what's improved, what you've already tried. This is not a sales call. If a smaller package fits you better, I'll tell you.

Step 2: We build your program. Not a template. Not a generic "ataxia protocol" off the internet. Workouts and nutrition built around your condition, your goals, and your starting point — because one doesn't work without the other.

Step 3: Video demos of every exercise. You see exactly how each movement is done before you do it. No guessing.

Step 4: You do the work, at home. This is where the change happens. The program sets the direction. Your daily reps drive the rewiring.

Step 5: We stay in your corner. Depending on your package, that means 30-minute programming calls every month, video feedback where you record yourself and we break down your movement and adjust, food journal feedback where we read what you're eating and tell you the truth about it, and monthly video calls. On our month-to-month plan, workout adjustments are unlimited.

Step 6: The program keeps moving. As you get better, it gets harder. That's the point. A program that stays the same is a program that stopped working.

One safety note, from a guy who's been through multiple concussions and broken bones: set up a safe space to train. Something sturdy to grab, a clear floor, and if you're a fall risk, someone nearby. We'll help you set it up on the consult. Being uncomfortable is the goal. Getting hurt is not.

Who We Work With

Every type of ataxia:

  • Spinocerebellar ataxia (SCA), all subtypes
  • Friedreich's ataxia
  • Cerebellar ataxia, acquired and hereditary
  • Multiple system atrophy (cerebellar type)
  • Ataxia-telangiectasia
  • Episodic ataxia
  • Ataxia with no known cause (I know that one personally)

And it doesn't stop at ataxia. MS, Parkinson's, stroke, TBI, ALS, cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, transverse myelitis, Guillain-Barré, peripheral neuropathy, brain tumor recovery, Chiari malformation, and more. Don't see yours? Ask. If it's neurological, there's a strong chance we can build for it.

What to Honestly Expect

I'm not going to promise you a miracle. False hope isn't kindness, and honest encouragement isn't cruelty.

Results depend on you and your condition. Type, severity, how long you've had it, your age, and above all how hard you work.

It's real, but it's not instant. Neuroplasticity takes time. Some people feel a difference within the first few weeks. The Hopkins group saw measurable walking gains in six. Real functional change — the kind that shows up in how you live — is built over months. And it zigzags. Some weeks you'll swear nothing's happening. It is. You just can't watch wiring rebuild in real time.

"Progressive" doesn't mean "hopeless." The nervous system keeps its ability to adapt even when a condition is progressive. The wrong approach lets it slide. The right one fights back.

The guarantee is real, and so is the condition. Our Ultimate All-Around program guarantees independence when the mobility checklist is completed to 100%. We do our side 100%. You do yours. I'll be straight with you: not every client reaches full independent walking. These conditions are complex. But every client who truly commits makes progress. Every one.

You have to do the work. I can build the best program in the world. If you don't do the reps, it won't matter. This isn't treatment that happens to you. It's rehab you do.

And remember, it's one body of work. The reps matter, but so does what happens between them. Sleep is when your nervous system locks in the gains (Why Your Nervous System Needs Sleep More Than Your Muscles Do). Breathing is your manual override when your system is revving too high (The Tool You Already Have). Cold therapy is the slogan in physical form (Cold Therapy and the Nervous System).

The Bottom Line

Remote rehab works. The research supports it. My clients' progress supports it. My own two feet support it.

The goal was never to "manage it." The goal is independence. Support is scaffolding you take down, not a cage you live in.

Get Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable That's the LWA way. Knowing your enemy is half the battle, and the enemy was never the miles between you and a clinic. It was a plan that never made it into your living room.

Living with ataxia, MS, Parkinson's, stroke, TBI, ALS, cerebral palsy, or any other neurological condition — and done with "manage it"? Book your FREE 30-minute Zoom consultation at lwastrong.com/contact. Art or Danny will reach out within 24 hours.
