Cold plunges are everywhere right now. Most people doing them are chasing a trend or trying to look tough. I do it because my nervous system demands it. Here's what's actually happening when you hit cold water — and why it matters more for neurological conditions than anybody is telling you.

Cold plunges are everywhere right now. Every influencer's got a tub. Every podcast's got an episode. Most of the people doing it are chasing a trend or trying to look tough on camera.

I do it because my nervous system demands it.

I have ataxia — I like to call it MS on steroids — and cold therapy is one of the most consistent tools in my stack. Not because it's trendy. Because it works, and I can feel it working. Let me tell you what's actually happening when you get in that water, and why it matters a whole lot more for a neurological condition than anybody's bothering to explain.

What Cold Actually Does to Your Nervous System

When you drop into cold water, your body doesn't just get cold. It responds.

Your sympathetic nervous system slams on — heart rate spikes, blood vessels clamp down, norepinephrine floods the system. That's the stress response, and yeah, it's uncomfortable as hell for the first 30 seconds. But here's the part everybody misses: the payoff isn't in the shock. It's in what happens after.

Your body adapts. Norepinephrine stays elevated for hours after a cold exposure, and that's been tied to lower inflammation, better mood, and sharper focus. For somebody with a neurological condition, that anti-inflammatory piece isn't a nice little bonus — neuroinflammation is one of the main engines driving neurological decline. Anything that turns that dial down deserves your attention.

Cold also kicks off a release of cold shock proteins, including one called RBM3 that researchers have connected to synaptic repair and neuroprotection. I'll be straight with you the way I always am: most of that RBM3 work is still lab and animal research, not settled human science. I'm not going to oversell it. But the direction it points is real, and it lines up with what I feel in my own body — your brain responds to cold by trying to protect and repair itself.

The Vagus Nerve Connection (The Part Everybody Skips)

Here's the piece almost every cold-plunge video ignores completely: cold exposure is one of the best ways there is to train your vagus nerve.

The vagus nerve is the main highway of your parasympathetic nervous system — the "rest and repair" side of the house. In neurological conditions, vagal tone is often shot. That means your nervous system gets stuck in a chronic stress state, which feeds inflammation, wrecks your sleep, deepens the fatigue, and drags your recovery to a crawl.

Cold water — especially on your face and neck — stimulates that nerve directly. Do it consistently and vagal tone improves over time. Better vagal tone means better recovery, better sleep, better heart rate variability, and a nervous system that can finally shift out of survival mode and into repair mode.

That's exactly why I don't plunge once in a while for a photo. I do it consistently, because the benefit stacks. One plunge is a cold bath. A hundred plunges is training.

What About Contrast Therapy?

Contrast therapy — going back and forth between hot and cold — adds another layer. All that opening and clamping of blood vessels works like a pump on your circulatory and lymphatic systems, flushing waste out and driving fresh blood and nutrients in.

If you're fighting spasticity, this one's worth a hard look. The heat loosens the tight muscle; the cold knocks down the inflammation that's feeding the spasticity in the first place. Run in the right order — hot first, cold last — it can take a real bite out of nighttime spasticity and leave you in better shape going into your next session. And better nighttime spasticity means better sleep, which is where your brain locks in everything you worked on. It's all connected.

The Honest Caveats — Read This Part

I'm not going to pretend this is for everybody or that there's no risk. That's not how I operate.

If you've got cardiovascular problems, autonomic dysfunction that messes with your blood pressure regulation, or Raynaud's, talk to your doctor before you get in cold water. The cardiovascular stress of cold immersion is real, and for some people it's flat-out contraindicated. That's not me covering myself — that's me not wanting you hurt.

Start slow. Cold showers before cold plunges. 30 seconds before you go chasing 3 minutes. Let your nervous system adapt before you push it.

And don't do it alone the first few times. The cold shock response can knock you sideways, especially if your nervous system is already dysregulated. Have somebody there.

How I Do It

My protocol is simple. Cold plunge in the morning, 3–4 times a week, 2–4 minutes depending on how I feel that day. Then I move — I don't crawl under a blanket on the couch, because that defeats the whole purpose. The goal is to let your body generate its own heat through activity, which compounds the metabolic and neurological payoff.

On contrast days: 10 minutes in a hot tub or sauna, then 2–3 minutes cold, repeat 2–3 cycles. Cold is always last.

Is it comfortable? Not even a little. That's the entire point. Your nervous system grows through challenge, not through comfort. That's true in your rehab, it's true on your plate, and it's true in cold water.

Speaking of your plate — cold therapy works a lot better on a body that isn't already drowning in inflammation. That's a big part of why we push a carnivore or at least a carnivore-leaning diet at LWA. You're using cold to knock inflammation down; don't spend the rest of the day eating it right back up. (And no, it won't tank your cholesterol like the fear-mongers claim — but that's a whole different conversation about mainstream medicine chasing a number on a lab report while nobody asks how you actually move and feel today.)

The Bottom Line

Cold therapy is not a cure. Nothing I talk about at LWA is a cure, and anybody promising you one is selling something. But it's a tool — a real one, with real biology behind it — that can lower neuroinflammation, train your vagus nerve, sharpen your recovery, and build a nervous system that's tougher than it was last month.

The people who write it off usually never did it consistently. The people who made it a habit almost never quit.

Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. That's the LWA way — and there's no better place to practice it than in cold water.
