Sleep.
Not "rest." Not lying on the couch with your eyes half open. Sleep. The real kind, where your brain clocks in and goes to work on you. I have ataxia — I like to call it MS on steroids — and I'll tell you straight: the nights I short myself on sleep, I feel it in my balance, my coordination, my voice, the next day. This isn't a throwaway wellness tip. It's part of the machine.
What Actually Happens in Your Brain While You Sleep
Most people think sleep is passive. Body shuts down, you recharge, you wake up. Wrong.
During deep sleep, your brain fires up the glymphatic system — a waste-clearance network that literally flushes out toxic proteins, including the same junk tied to neurological decline. Your cerebrospinal fluid washes your brain while you're unconscious. Miss that window night after night, and that garbage piles up.
For somebody with a neurological condition — ataxia, MS, Parkinson's, TBI, stroke, and the rest — that buildup isn't some abstract science-class idea. It shows up as more tremor, worse balance, heavier fatigue, slower speech. And the work you grinded out in your session yesterday? Your brain locks that in during sleep. Cut it short and you just kneecapped your own progress. You did the reps and then threw half of them away.
Sleep and Neuroplasticity: The Part Nobody Explains
We talk about neuroplasticity a lot at LWA — your brain's ability to rewire itself, build new pathways, and route around the damaged ones. Here's what almost nobody tells you: a huge chunk of that rewiring happens while you sleep.
The motor patterns you practiced. The balance drills. The coordination work. Your brain doesn't fully bank those during the session — it banks them at night, in slow-wave and REM sleep, replaying and reinforcing everything you drilled that day.
That's why two people can run the exact same rehab program and get completely different results. One sleeps 7–8 hours. One sleeps 5. The one at 5 is leaving gains on the table every single night — and then wondering why they're stuck. That's not a mystery. That's math.
Why Neurological Conditions Make Sleep Harder (It's Not On You)
Here's the cruel irony, and I'm not going to sugarcoat it: the people who need sleep the most are usually the ones fighting hardest to get it.
Neurological conditions wreck sleep in a bunch of ways:
- Pain and spasticity — muscle tightness that ramps up at night
- Autonomic dysfunction — irregular heart rate, temperature that won't regulate
- Medication side effects — plenty of neuro meds mess with your sleep architecture
- Anxiety and depression — both common with these conditions, both sleep-killers
- Restless legs and limb movements — more common in MS, Parkinson's, and peripheral neuropathy
Let me be clear about something: this is not a willpower problem. It's a neurology problem. You're not lazy and you're not weak for struggling with it. But — and this is the LWA part — a neurology problem is exactly the kind of problem we go to work on instead of shrugging at.
What We Tell Our Clients
At LWA, sleep is part of the program. Not an afterthought we tack on at the end. Here's where we put the focus:
1. Protect your sleep window. Pick a bedtime and a wake time and hold the line — weekends included. Your circadian rhythm is a neurological system. Jerk it around and everything downstream gets jerked around with it.
2. Cool the room. Your core temperature has to drop to trigger deep sleep, and most people sleep in a room that's too warm. Aim for 65–68°F. Small change, big payoff.
3. Kill the screens. Blue light suppresses melatonin — that's not a myth. And when your system's already compromised, that hit lands harder. Put the phone down before bed.
4. Attack the spasticity. If muscle tightness is yanking you awake, that's a rehab problem, not just a sleep problem. The right stretching, positioning, and exercise timing can cut nighttime spasticity way down. This is exactly the kind of thing we build into your program.
5. Front-load your fluids. Hydration matters, but if you're up peeing at 2 a.m., you're shredding your sleep into pieces. Drink earlier in the day and ease off at night.
And one more that mainstream care always skips: what you eat runs how you sleep. This is a big reason we push a carnivore or at least a carnivore-leaning diet — it steadies your blood sugar so you're not spiking and crashing all night, and it cools the inflammation that has you staring at the ceiling. (And no, it won't tank your cholesterol the way the fear-mongers claim — but that's a whole other conversation about mainstream medicine chasing a number on a chart instead of how you actually feel.) Feed the nervous system right during the day, and it repairs itself better at night. Fuel and sleep are teammates.
The Bottom Line
You can do everything right in your sessions. You can eat clean. You can take your supplements. But if you're running on 5 hours a night, you are working against yourself — plain and simple.
Your nervous system doesn't recover on your schedule. It recovers on its schedule — in the dark, while you're out cold, when you finally get out of the way and let it do its job. Your job is to give it the time and the fuel to do that work. That's not slacking off. That's strategy. And strategy is what gets you up the mountain toward real independence.
Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. That's the LWA way. Knowing your enemy is half the battle — and now you know this one's been robbing you in your sleep.
