The Origin Story

"I Built LWA Because Nothing Else Existed That Could Do What I Needed."

My name is Art Thomas. I have Acquired Ataxia — and that condition accelerated my unknown hereditary Ataxia, compounding the challenges I face every single day.

For a year and a half, no one knew what was wrong with me. No diagnosis. No answers. Just a body that was failing and a medical system that couldn't explain why. It was Georgetown University Hospital that finally gave me the diagnosis that changed everything: Ataxia.

When I got out of the hospital, I couldn't even touch my nose. Basic coordination — the kind most people never think about — was completely gone. I was in a wheelchair, dependent on others for everything. Walking, driving, traveling, living alone — all of it felt like a distant memory.

The Journey

From Wheelchair to Complete Independence

I became the very first person in the world to go from a wheelchair to complete independence using the LWA approach. Not partial independence. Complete independence — walking, driving, traveling, and living alone. This approach is the only one of its kind in the world, and I built it because nothing else existed that could do what I needed it to do.

I also made history as the very first person with Ataxia to undergo stem cell treatment through R3 Stem Cell — a groundbreaking step that opened new doors for neurological rehabilitation. The results were absolutely amazing. R3 Stem Cell is now an official advisor to LWA.

The cerebellum, often called the "little brain," is responsible for coordinating and controlling motor functions. When it's damaged — by disease, injury, or degeneration — the signals between your brain and your body break down. It's not weakness. It's a broken signal. And broken signals can be rebuilt.

Every neurologist I saw told me the same thing — the wheelchair is as good as it gets with Ataxia. That's it. That's your life. I laughed. They told me it wasn't a laughing matter. It was to me — because I knew they had never met anyone as determined as me.

I built LWA because I needed it to exist — a program built by someone living it, not just studying it. Someone who understood that "manage your symptoms" is not a goal. Independence is the goal. Now it exists for you.

The Full Fight

Ataxia Was Not the Only Battle

Ataxia was the headline. But it was never the whole story. Art has fought through multiple concussions and broken bones — injuries that would sideline most people for months, stacked on top of a nervous system already under attack. Every setback became another data point. Every recovery became another proof of concept.

Then came the fight that nearly ended everything. Art developed a fistula — a condition where the bladder and colon begin leaking into each other. The result was sepsis. Not once. Not twice. Four times. Sepsis four times. Each episode a life-threatening systemic infection that shuts the body down from the inside. Most people don't survive one. Art survived four — and came back fighting every single time.

This is not background information. This is the reason Art's approach to rehabilitation is different from anything else that exists. He has not studied adversity from a distance. He has lived inside it — repeatedly, at the highest possible stakes — and built his way back out every time. The LWA approach was not designed in a lab. It was forged in the hardest possible conditions, by someone who had no choice but to make it work.

When Art says "Get Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable" — he means it in a way very few people on earth can. And when he tells you that independence is possible, he is not offering you a motivational slogan. He is offering you a proven path, built on a foundation of personal experience that no credential, no degree, and no textbook can replicate.

Credentials & Milestones

Why Art's Experience Matters

First Person With Ataxia — Complete Independence

The first documented case of a person with Ataxia achieving complete independence (walking, driving, traveling, living alone) using the LWA approach.

First Ataxia Patient — R3 Stem Cell Treatment

Made history as the first person with Ataxia to undergo stem cell treatment through R3 Stem Cell. R3 Stem Cell is now an official LWA advisor.

Diagnosed at Georgetown University Hospital

Acquired Ataxia compounded by hereditary Ataxia — a dual diagnosis that makes Art's recovery even more remarkable and his expertise uniquely credible.

Founder of the Only Program of Its Kind

LWA is the only neurological rehabilitation program in the world built by someone who has personally gone from wheelchair to complete independence using the same approach.

"Get Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable. Independence Is Guaranteed."
