Here's something almost nobody in a white coat will sit you down and explain: the "sugar-free" stuff you're pouring into your water to be healthy may be doing a number on the exact organ you're fighting to protect — your brain.

If you're living with a neurological condition — ataxia, MS, Parkinson's, a TBI, a stroke, neuropathy, ALS, any of it — your nervous system is already under siege. Let's be brutally honest about it.

Mainstream medicine loves a number on a lab report. Lower this, raise that, here's a pill, see you in six months. What almost nobody asks is the only question that actually matters to you: what is this doing to how I move, balance, think, and function — today?

Animal studies show long-term aspartame can trigger neuroinflammation (activated microglia — your brain's immune cells stuck in attack mode) and even apoptosis (cell death) in brain tissue. One 2022 study in PNAS found aspartame produced anxiety-like behavior in mice that carried over into the next two generations, along with changes in the brain's glutamate-GABA balance.

And in 2023 the World Health Organization's cancer agency (IARC) classified aspartame as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" (Group 2B). Regulators still say it's fine at normal intake, and the FDA pushed back on the WHO. Fine. But here's our take: when the debate is "is it a little toxic or a lot toxic to your brain," why are you drinking it at all?

Sucralose: Zero Calories, But Your Brain Still Gets Confused

Sucralose (Splenda) is sold as the safe one because it passes through "mostly undigested." But a 2025 clinical trial out of USC, published in Nature Metabolism, put people in a brain scanner and found that sucralose increased activity in the hypothalamus — the brain's hunger-control center — and changed how it connected to regions involved in motivation and decision-making. Compared to sugar, it actually increased hunger by about 17%, while doing nothing for the hormones that normally tell you you're full.

Translation: you drink something sweet, your brain expects fuel, no fuel arrives, and the wiring that manages appetite gets scrambled. That's a sweetener reaching up and rewiring brain signaling. Not exactly "inert."

Erythritol: The "Natural" Sugar Alcohol With a Clotting Problem

This one stings because erythritol gets marketed as natural and keto-friendly, and it's hiding in a ton of "clean" sugar-free products. Then the Cleveland Clinic dropped a study in Nature Medicine (2023), backed up by more work in 2024: higher blood erythritol levels were associated with higher rates of heart attack and stroke, and in healthy people, a single standard 30-gram serving made blood platelets more likely to clot.

Read that again as a neurological patient. Stroke. Clots. You are already managing a brain and nervous system that don't have margin to spare. Why add something that nudges your clotting risk in the wrong direction?

So Where Does Stevia Fit In?

Stevia comes from a plant leaf, and unlike the lab-built sweeteners above, it doesn't carry the same documented baggage of becoming an excitotoxin or scrambling your hunger wiring. That alone makes it the saner default for a nervous system you're trying to protect.

There's also an interesting wrinkle worth knowing about. A preclinical study found that whole-leaf stevia extract was effective in a test tube against Borrelia burgdorferi — the Lyme bacteria — in all its shape-shifting forms, even the stubborn biofilm and "persister" forms that antibiotics struggle with.
