Nutrition Is the Foundation: What You Eat Is Either Fighting Your Neurological Condition or Feeding It
Your brain is 60% fat, runs on glucose, and is under constant oxidative attack. What you eat either arms your nervous system for the fight — or hands ammunition to the enemy. Here's what the science actually says.
Your brain is roughly 60% fat by dry weight. It's the fattiest organ in your body — which means every low-fat diet trend of the last 40 years was, in a very literal sense, starving your most important organ.
The brain also consumes about 20% of your body's total energy despite being only 2% of your body weight. It has almost no energy storage of its own. It depends entirely on a continuous supply of fuel from the bloodstream. Disrupt that supply — through poor diet, blood sugar instability, or chronic inflammation — and neurological function degrades fast.
For people with neurological conditions, nutrition isn't a wellness topic. It's a clinical one.
The Inflammation Connection
Chronic neuroinflammation is a feature of virtually every major neurological condition — ataxia, MS, Parkinson's, ALS, TBI, stroke recovery, and more. The immune system, which is supposed to protect the brain, starts attacking it instead.
Diet is one of the most powerful modulators of systemic inflammation we have access to.
The Western diet — high in processed foods, refined carbohydrates, industrial seed oils, and sugar — is profoundly pro-inflammatory. It's essentially a daily dose of gasoline on the fire that's already burning in a neurologically compromised brain.
At LWA, we push a carnivore or at least a carnivore-leaning diet. Not because it's trendy — because it feeds the brain and nervous system, cools inflammation, and gives you the raw material to actually rebuild. Doctors like Shawn Baker, Anthony Chaffee, and Ken Berry have been saying this out loud for years. Fair warning: this way of eating will not lower your cholesterol. That's fine. Cholesterol is a building block for your brain. Mainstream medicine chasing that number while ignoring how you move and function today is exactly the problem LWA exists to solve.
What the Brain Actually Needs
Omega-3 fatty acids: DHA is the primary structural fat in the brain. It's essential for membrane fluidity, synaptic function, and neuroplasticity. The brain cannot synthesize it in meaningful quantities — it must come from diet. Sources: fatty fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel), fish oil.
B vitamins: B12, B6, and folate are essential for myelin production, neurotransmitter synthesis, and homocysteine metabolism. Elevated homocysteine is associated with accelerated neurological decline. B12 deficiency in particular can mimic and worsen neurological symptoms — get tested.
Magnesium: Involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions, including many related to nerve function and muscle control. Deficiency is extremely common and associated with increased neurological symptoms, muscle cramps, and poor sleep.
Vitamin D: More accurately a hormone than a vitamin, Vitamin D has receptors throughout the brain and nervous system. Deficiency is associated with increased risk and severity of multiple neurological conditions. Most people with neurological conditions are deficient.
Protein: Neurotransmitters — dopamine, serotonin, GABA, acetylcholine — are synthesized from amino acids. Without adequate dietary protein, the brain can't make the chemical messengers it needs to function.
What to Cut
Refined sugar and high-glycemic carbohydrates: Cause blood sugar spikes and crashes that destabilize brain energy supply, promote inflammation, and accelerate oxidative damage.
Industrial seed oils (canola, soybean, corn, sunflower): High in omega-6 fatty acids that compete with omega-3s and promote inflammatory pathways. These oils are in virtually every processed food.
Ultra-processed foods: Combinations of sugar, refined carbs, industrial oils, and artificial additives that collectively drive inflammation and undermine neurological function.
Alcohol: A neurotoxin. Even moderate consumption accelerates cerebellar atrophy — the exact brain region most affected by many neurological conditions. For people with neurological disease, the risk-benefit calculation is not close.
The Gut-Brain Axis
The gut microbiome — the trillions of bacteria in your digestive tract — produces neurotransmitters, regulates inflammation, and communicates directly with the brain via the vagus nerve. A disrupted microbiome is associated with increased neuroinflammation, mood disorders, and worsening neurological symptoms.
What destroys it? Antibiotics, ultra-processed foods, sugar, and chronic stress.
Practical Starting Points
You don't need a perfect diet. You need a better one. Start here:
- Add fatty fish twice a week. Salmon, sardines, mackerel. If you won't eat fish, take a quality fish oil or algae-based DHA supplement.
- Get your Vitamin D and B12 tested. Deficiencies are common and correctable. Don't guess.
- Drink water. Dehydration impairs cognitive function and worsens neurological symptoms. Most people are chronically mildly dehydrated.
- Cut one ultra-processed food per week. Don't try to overhaul everything at once. Pick one thing and replace it.
Nutrition is the foundation. You cannot out-train a bad diet. You cannot rehabilitate a brain you're actively poisoning with inflammatory food. The exercise program matters enormously — but it works best when the nutritional foundation is solid.
